The Remus family lived in West Prussia (modern northern Poland) from 1600 including a fair number of Remus family members in Danzig (click here to go directly to the Danzig information). This section also contains a lot on life in West Prussia. Also, the West Prussia section lists all known Remus family members in the 1700's and 1800's in West Prussia. (This includes many of the women's lines that married in my maternal Hoffmann and Lehmann lines plus my paternal line great grandmother Wilhelmine Hardwardt line.)

Many of the cloth makers in the villages north of Posen in Poland also chose to migrate to Volhynia and America. These families probably arrived in this area about 1750. The particular focus here is on the Krassin family of Schokken, Rattai, and Radowonke and the Hardwardt family of Szczepanowo and Rogowo. Also information is provided on Schoenlanke, the home of the Schultz family of Alberta.

Many of the Germans in Volhynia came from West Prussia and the Posen area above. Here are many details on their life in Volhynia and Kiev Parishes (formerly in the Russian empire and now in independent Ukraine) from 1830 to 1892.

To find out about the arrival and life of German cloth makers in Volhynia in the 1830's. The narrative and pictures particularly focus on the villages of Faustindorf, Stanislowa, and Alt Sapust and particularly on the Hoffmann, Lehmann, Spitzer, Radke, and related families. These people migrated from the Posen area and came for economic reasons. Most moved on to Romansdorf in the 1850's. (My paternal Remus line originated in Saxony as likely did my maternal Hoffmann and Lehmann lines)

The Remus family originated in Saxony in Germany and came via Neumark to West Prussia. It appears the Remus family name arose in Kamenz about 1450 and descendents continued living there for many centuries. The Remus family was in other villages in Saxony, most importantly in Grossenhein. There is also information on Luther and the Reformation with an emphasis on the Remus family connections. Also you will find out about the Martin Remus in Leipzig in about 1570 plus details of Luther's Wittenberg.

(These families are about 1/8 of my maternal lineage but very interesting.)

The focus here is on the villages in the area of Grimmen, Vorpommern. This area is due north of Berlin. The families of interest are the Poll and Leverenz families that migrated initially to the Danville Illinois area.

For a while I thought that I might be a descendent of the Rem(us) family of Augsburg in southern Germany. I am not related but the story of the Patrician Rem(us) family of Augsburg dating back to the 1300's is very interesting anyway. Also you will find out about Martin Luther in Augsburg, Jakob Fugger (the then richest man in the western world) and Augsburg's role in the Reformation.

(My maternal grandmother's family was from Sweden)

The focus here is on the villages in the Nassojo area of Smaland, that is, central southern Sweden. This area is south of Stockholm and west of Gothenburg. The families of interest are the descendents of the Johannes Andersson including the Lungren family of Langenberg, Saskatchewan and the Sandberg and Sandborg families of southern Minnesota.
